General Program Facts

  • With increasing numbers of children diagnosed on the autism spectrum, New Beginnings was established in 1997 (joining the Gramon Family of Schools, which has operated continuously since 1939).
  • The New Beginnings school day begins at 9:00am and ends upon dismissal at 2:30pm.
  • Our 12-month program includes a summer session during July and August.
  • Our program was developed to incorporate different strategies and techniques to meet each individual child’s needs.
  • A full-time school nurse is available to students throughout the day.
  • We have a PPO – Parent and Professionals Organization as well as a Class Parent Program.
  • Parents are welcome to visit during the school day. We ask that you contact your child’s teacher and make an appointment in advance. 

Curriculum Facts

  • New Beginnings offers academic subjects including reading, mathematics, language arts literacy, social studies, science, health and life skills.
  • The overall approach to instruction is eclectic, with the individual needs of each student being paramount to instructional design.
  • New Beginnings provides comprehensive learning settings from ABA and Discrete Trial Teaching to a more traditional learning environment.

Transportation Facts

  • Bus transportation is provided by a student’s sending district.
  • If requested by the District, aides are provided for a student on the bus.
  • The school staff assists students from the bus to their class.
  • The school is located in Fairfield, NJ and is easily accessible to Route 80, Route 46 and Route 280.

Classroom Facts

  • Class size is dependent on the needs of each individual child, therefore, we have classes with 6 students as well as classes that are equipped to handle 10 to 12 children, utilizing an average 2:1 ratio.
  • Each class has a full-time, certified teacher and full-time teacher assistants. Additionally, a full interdisciplinary team is available to provide the necessary support to our program.
  • Each child is between the ages of 3 and 21. Abilities vary between each individual child.

Technology Facts

  • All areas of the curriculum at New Beginnings are infused with computer technology, based on the child’s Individualized Education Plan and the New Jersey Common Core Standards.
  • Teachers use computers to enhance student learning and motivation.
  • The teaching staff at New Beginnings is trained in various adaptive equipment and programs such as iPads, SMART Boards, Edmark, Touch Math, touch screens, and various augmentative devices.

Progress and Evaluation Facts

  • Students are evaluated yearly in compliance with their IEP.
  • Progress Reports are completed three times a year.
  • Progress is evaluated and documented through the following:
    • Goals & Objectives of each child are indicated in their IEPs.
    • Daily teacher observation
    • Daily logs kept by the teacher and therapists
    • Progress Reports
    • Communication made daily with parents through various methods: including email and communications notebooks where comments are written daily and shared with parents

Transition to Adulthood

  • The transition program at New Beginnings includes career awareness experiences where our students prepare for the world of work outside of school.
  • Through partnerships with local area businesses, High School students have the opportunity to pursue experiences that are specifically matched to their interests and skill level.
